Library Journal Review

Literature and art seem to go hand in hand, but exactly how much? Coauthors Camplin (The Rise of the Plutocrats) and Ranauro (senior picture researcher, Thames & Hudson) explore the link between the two in this illustrated history of books, artists, and Western painting between the 15th and 20th centuries. They offer beautiful examples of art featuring readers and writers in various states and explain that with -Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press, the relationship between artist and monograph was negatively altered but fortunately revived as the cultural significance of the printed word increased. Their ideas are neatly supported by images from artists ranging from Élisabeth Vigée LeBrun to Pablo Picasso. Brief chapters packed with information and picture captions provide even more detail. VERDICT Bridging the gap between book and art lover perfectly, this work presents relevant information with stunning paintings to satisfy experts of both fields.-Rebecca Kluberdanz, Central New York Lib.
